Three‐dimensional morphological and positional analysis of the temporomandibular joint in adults with posterior crossbite: A cross‐sectional comparative study

Objectives The purpose of this study was to three-dimensionally (3D) evaluate the morphological and positional features temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in adults with unilateral bilateral posterior crossbite compared aligned control subjects. Materials Methods This cross-sectional comparative analysed cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images 90 adult subjects’ divided into three equal groups: (BCG), (UCG) group (CG). 3D measurements TMJ included following: (a) position, angulation inclination mandibular condyles; (b) centralisation condyles their respective fossae; (c) volumetric spaces. Intra- intergroup differences were identified using paired Student's t test an analysis variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post hoc test, respectively. Results Regarding intra-group side-based comparisons, there significant anterior superior spaces anteroposterior condylar position UCG. Intergroup comparisons revealed vertical inclination, medial width height, space between unaffected side UCG left sides other groups.
